MetroLink Station Design and Construction: Boyle Avenue/Central West End

St. Louis, Missouri

Bi-State Development Agency was awarded a TIGER grant for the construction of a new Boyle Avenue MetroLink Station, an extension of the Central West End Station platform, and a new multi-use bicycle and pedestrian path as part of the Chouteau Greenway.  Access provided all civil engineering services for the new Boyle Avenue MetroLink Station, in addition to civil engineering services and design of the new multi-use bicycle and pedestrian path from Boyle Ave to Sarah Ave. Access analyzed potential green infrastructure treatments for this project, including rain gardens, bioswales, bioretention, porous hardscape and amended soils.

This project introduced a distinct set of accessibility, scheduling, and constructability challenges as it is located in the Cortex innovation District. Many stakeholders were involved in this design and construction process, including the Cortex Innovation Community, BJC Healthcare, Washington University, Great Rivers Greenway, St. Louis Development Corporation, Citizens for Modern Transit, IKEA, and Wexford Science & Technology.


Mississippi Greenway - Metro Plaza Site Design & Engineering

Access Engineering is providing all civil engineering design services for Metro Plaza, located within the Mississippi Greenway in the City of St. Louis. This project stems from the North Riverfront Master Plan, of which Access had significant contribution. Access will have involvement in the refinement of the Master Plan during the completion of the Schematic Design phase.  Access will provide civil engineering design, utility and agency coordination, cost estimating, permitting, hydraulic calculations and reports, permitting/NEPA process, and traffic management.


National Garden Club Front Entrance Enhancements

Access Engineering is providing all civil engineering services for the redesign and enhancement of the National Garden Club front entrance in the Shaw Neighborhood. The project removes impervious surface from the site and incorporates various BMPs onsite.

The design includes green infrastructure elements such as permeable pavements, rain gardens, ADA compliant accessibility improvements, drainage improvements, brick screening walls and LED lighting. The project included the addition of three garden seating areas to the site, which were all designed to be ADA accessible. Site design involved preserving existing plantings and salvaging as many existing onsite materials as possible.

This project presents a unique opportunity to enhance the aesthetics of the Club entrance, which is adjacent to the Missouri Botanical Garden.


Lambert St. Louis International Airport Terminal 1 Staircase Replacement

St. Louis, Missouri

Access Engineering was responsible for providing ADA compliance review for a proposed ramp and stair system at Lambert St. Louis International Airport. Access was also responsible for developing proposed elevations of the ramp and stair system to meet ADA compliance and provide proper cross slope drainage.

The project replaced an existing concrete staircase at Terminal 1 between Arrivals Drive and Departures Drive at Lambert St. Louis International Airport. Sidewalks and pedways were designed to provide ADA accessibility to Arrivals Drive.


MetroLink ADA Station Upgrades

St. Louis, Missouri

Access Engineering was the Prime Engineering Consultant for this ADA compliance retrofit project. Several MetroLink stations were not compliant with ADA guidelines, and posed serious risk to MetroLink users. Additionally, several ticket vending counters were not in compliance with ADA and ICC accessibility standards. Access was responsible for reconfiguring the parking lots, driving and walking surfaces for several MetroLink stations in the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County to provide accessible routes in a cost effective way.

Access’ designs corrected deficiencies with durable and attractive solutions. Access provided site paving and drainage design, utility relocation details, structural retaining wall designs, specifications, and engineers cost estimates for UMSL South, Delmar, Union Station, and Wellston Stations. The ticket vending solutions were performed for Forest Park, Brentwood, Clayton, North Hanley and Shrewsbury Stations. Access provided construction administration services for this MetroLink project, as well. In understanding the unique needs for MetroLink operation and accessibility, Access ensured any disruption to Metro operations were minimized during construction.
